Traffic is not an easy thing in Italy. During the summer on the week-end many people go to the seaside so you can easily find traffic jam on the way to the seaside on friday evening and saturday morning and on the way to Florence on sunday evening. Especially if you arrive to florence from the freeway from Siena prepare to spend 3 hours in the freeway ... Same problem on Easter holiday especially if the weather is nice and on every national holiday on the calendar.

A lot of people in Italy have holidays during the month of July and August so on certain dates (concentrated to the beginning or the end of the month) you can also have heavy traffic.

Another concern is to park in towns as Florence where beside the traffic interdition in the historic center you have hard time to find a cheap parking.

by bus

A problem of the town is the parking, especially in a town as Florence. If you are ready to spend 2 euro per hour for a parking it is a little problem, if you are in a budget prepare to park far from the center and prepare to walk a lot or to take a bus (if you are able to decript the timetable). A good solution is going to Florence by the public bus service. The bus service that serve the southern part of Florence until Siena is the sita bus line and the Train (funny but Train is a name of a bus company). Note that you need to buy the bus ticket before getting on the bus. They are sold in the Tabaccherie (where sigarettes are sold) and in pub (we call them BAR). Once you get on the bus you have to obliterate the ticket. The line from Florence to Siena is the n° 350. You can have all the other timetables on line by their web site. The bus is cheap: 2,80 euro for a 30 Km trip. More difficult to utilize the bus to visit the medieval village of the chianti. There are lines to visit san gimignano and volterra, siena and monteriggioni.

BY TRAIN

For more long travel there is the train service managed by Trenitalia the main train station of your interest to visit Tuscany can be the train station of Florence. There are several train station but the one that arrives in the downtown is that called "Santa Maria Novella" and that you will find written with its abbreviation S.M.N.

Another station in siena, pisa, and a useful one in poggibonsi if you are going to go to Siena or the Chianti region arriving from pisa.

BY AIRPLANE

The most important airport in Tuscany are that of Florence (name Amerigo Vespucci but also called Peretola the code utilized is the FLR ) and the one in Pisa called Galileo Galilei with the code PSA
